Taiwan urmărește cu anxietate summitul Trump-Xi
Taiwan is closely observing the upcoming summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, particularly regarding discussions on its political status and arms purchases. The outcome could significantly impact Taiwan’s defense strategy and its relationship with the United States.
As Trump prepares for his meeting with Xi, Taiwanese officials have expressed confidence in their partnership with the U.S., despite concerns from some U.S. analysts about potential concessions Trump might offer to Xi. The longstanding U.S. “One China” policy acknowledges China’s claim over Taiwan while maintaining unofficial relations and significant arms sales to the island.
During the summit, Trump has indicated he will discuss U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, which could jeopardize a pending $14 billion arms package. This has raised alarms among Taiwanese officials, who fear that Taiwan’s defense needs might be used as a bargaining chip in negotiations with China.
Recent communications from U.S. officials have reassured Taiwan of continued support, yet anxiety persists. Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung emphasized the hope that the summit does not lead to unexpected developments regarding Taiwan. Meanwhile, Deputy Foreign Minister Francois Wu articulated concerns about Taiwan being included in discussions between Trump and Xi.
